for Dr. Alex Kurikeshu
Dr. Alexander P. Kurikeshu, 68, of Woodbine, Maryland passed away peacefully on March 3, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 28, 1953 on a rubber plantation in Pooyappally, Kerala, India to Geevarghese & Sosamma Kurikeshu. Alex was the youngest of five children (four girls and one boy). He lived an idyllic life on the family rubber plantation, which also grew cashew, coconut and mango trees. As a child, he and his older sisters would gather cashews to sell for their spending money. He loved being in nature and was an avid animal lover—often getting in trouble for bringing home animals like squirrels, birds and a mongoose. In high school, he participated in theater and loved studying agriculture.
After graduating from high school in 1971, he attended the University of Kerala and received a Bachelor of Science in 1974. He then went to North India to complete a Masters in Agriculture. When Alex was twenty-two, he relocated to the United States and decided that he wanted to pursue a career in medicine. He attended medical school at the University of Technology at Santiago in the Dominican Republic and graduated in 1987.
At the age of twenty-six, he met Mary and on that same day they agreed to get married. Mary always says it was his dimples and million-dollar-smile that convinced her that he was the one. They were married on June 23, 1980. After marrying the love of his life, he went on to have three children (two daughters, Susan and Rebecca, and a son, Joshua) whom he loved dearly.
Alex knew that his purpose and calling was to share the message of the Gospel, and he found creative ways to make it possible. This included years of doing prison ministry, hosting a weekly radio show titled “Life With a Vision” on Christian family radio, serving as a hospital Chaplain, planting churches in India, serving as a counselor on a global discipleship ministry, and mentoring/discipling many. He also served as an elder at the International Christian Fellowship in Beltsville, Maryland for the past 30 years (1992-2022). Professionally, he founded American Cardiovascular Imaging, LLC in 2006 and was the CEO for 16 years (2006-2022). Alex retired from Washington Adventist Hospital in 2015 after working in Nuclear Medicine for 30 years (1985-2015).
In his spare time Alex enjoyed tending to his beloved garden, beekeeping, book collecting, amateur photography, cooking spicy Indian pickles, singing in the shower, reading the Word of God, and leading morning and evening prayer lines. Most importantly, he enjoyed being together as a family—nothing was better than creating special moments with his family, extended family, and friends over a nice meal.
Alex is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his children, Susan and Gregory, Rebecca and Jim, Joshua and Sarah; his grandchildren, Dhara, Rohan, Kieran, Aila, Norah, Levi, Arden, Ezri, and Baby George; and his older sisters, Kunjumol and Annie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Geevarghese & Sosamma, and two elder sisters, Lilly and Amukutty.
Alex was a faithful husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. He faithfully followed Christ and passionately pursued sharing the Gospel with everyone he met. He carried himself humbly so people often did not know of his title or achievements. He valued meekness and humility. On the day he left home and never returned, his Bible was left open to the book of Matthew and the Beatitudes.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
Matthew 5:3-12
